DFER National President Shavar Jeffries Statement on President Trump’s Federal Budget Blueprint

Washington, DC–Democrats for Education Reform (DFER) National President Shavar Jeffries today released the following statement in response to President Trump’s federal budget blueprint:

“Slashing our nation’s safety net, raiding student aid, cutting funds for hundreds of thousands of teachers, and ending vital programs for our nation’s most underserved kids and communities will hamper our nation’s public schools in delivering a world-class education to each and every child.  As progressives, we believe in a holistic approach to education reform that marries increased investments, innovation, choice, and accountability. By cutting billions of dollars of support for public education, and coupling those draconian cuts with accompanying cuts in aid for housing, health care, and social services, the Trump budget threatens to undermine years of bipartisan progress in expanding opportunity for students and their families.

“We hoped that the Trump administration would have embraced a fuller picture by addressing kids in public schools and bolstering programs that help educators as well as low-income students and students of color. The priorities in today’s budget signal otherwise. We look forward to working with Congress in reconfiguring Trump’s priorities in ways that truly benefit all of our nation’s students.”
