Legislation aimed at repealing mayoral control of the city’s school system was dead on arrival in the Republican-led state Senate.
Majority Leader Dean Skelos (R-Nassau) gave the controversial measure an “F” and indicated that it would not even come up.
“Senate Republicans support increased accountability in education,” said Skelos spokesman Scott Reif. “There are no plans to take up this bill.”
Sen. Velmanette Montgomery (D-Brooklyn) and Assemblyman Keith Wright (D-Manhattan) had introduced separate bills aimed at reducing the number of mayoral appointees to the Board of Education and letting the board, rather than the mayor, hire the city’s schools chancellor.
