Dozens of experienced Denver teachers have lost their jobs in the past few years, and their union says a controversial education reform law is to blame. Senate Bill 191, which passed in 2010, set up a new evaluation system for teachers and principals; but the Colorado Education Association says Denver Public Schools is abusing a provision of the law to bring in cheaper teachers at the expense of its more seasoned staff.
On Wednesday, the CEA filed suit, claiming that part of the law is unconstitutional because it violates teachers’ due process rights.
