WASHINGTON, D.C. (AUG. 24, 2022) — Education Reform Now (ERN) Senior Policy Analyst James Murphy released the following statement in response to President Biden’s statement concerning student debt cancellation:
“ERN applauds President Biden’s decision to cancel $10,000 in student loan debt for individuals earning $125,000 or less and to cancel $20,000 in debt for students who received Pell grants in college. Higher education should be a tool for driving social mobility, but the high cost of college has saddled too many first-generation students, students from low- and middle-income households, and students of color with debt that makes it difficult to capitalize on their investments in education.
It’s important to stress, however, that debt cancellation, particularly for students who receive Pell Grants, should be just one component in a larger campaign to make a high quality college degree accessible and affordable for anyone who wishes to pursue one.”
