In its June 30 editorial, “Colleges must still seek racial diversity,” the Globe calls for schools to eliminate preferences for children of alumni, who, due to systemic racism and wealth gaps, are more likely to be white. Schools long ago should have ceased to perpetuate a practice created in the 1920s to exclude Jewish students from elite institutions, but they haven’t.
The Massachusetts Legislature should take action to ensure more equitable admissions practices by approving a bill filed by Senator Lydia Edwards and Representative Michael Moran that would ban legacy preferences in both public and private institutions.
