SBOE Public Meeting
Good afternoon State Board of Education members,
My name is Christine Miller, and I live in Ward 1. I’m here as a parent and a civic leader for Education Reform Now Advocacy D.C., an organization fighting for a just and equitable public education system for all D.C. students. I am here today to testify on the critical issue to discuss the 2024-25 SY budget and highlight efforts to improve math education in our schools.
There is a pressing need to assess the current state of math education across the District, including our schools in Ward 1. Envisioning what this looks like begins with an understanding of best practices and a dedication to analyzing student performance data to pinpoint areas of weakness better and identify targeted interventions to address them. This data-driven approach is essential for guiding our efforts toward meaningful improvement. Resources, professional development opportunities, and ongoing support will ensure our educators are equipped with the latest strategies for effective math instruction.
It is imperative that we invest in training programs for school leaders that equip them with the knowledge and tools necessary to support and promote excellence in math education is imperative. Strong leadership is crucial for fostering a culture of academic achievement and continuous improvement within our schools.
Moreover, as we look towards our schools, educators, and the ‘experts’ for ways to improve our math instruction, I ask you all to think beyond the confines of our schools’ walls toward implementing initiatives to engage families in their children’s math learning journey. By offering resources, workshops, and tutoring services tailored to parents and caregivers, we can empower them to play a more active role in supporting their children’s academic success.
Finally, I urge the establishment of a comprehensive math tutoring program that provides targeted support to students in need. This program should offer flexible options, including before and after-school sessions, as well as summer programs, to ensure that all students have access to the assistance they require to thrive in math.
In conclusion, I believe that by implementing these evidence-based strategies, we can significantly improve math education outcomes in Ward 1 and all our students across the District.
Thank you for your attention to this critical issue, and I urge you to prioritize investment in our students’ future by supporting these initiatives.
