Teacher Quality & Preparation

Policy Overview

Every child deserves access to high quality teachers.

Yet across our nation, students in high-poverty schools are more than three times as likely to be taught by teachers rated unsatisfactory as students in low-poverty schools, and Black and Latino students are significantly less likely to be taught by an educator who shares their racial identity.

Because teacher quality is the number one in-school influence on student achievement, we support policies that promote innovation and improvements in teacher preparation, reward excellent teachers who teach in high-needs schools and subjects, and diversify the teaching pipeline, so that no student is denied the opportunities unlocked by excellent educators.
