CBC-ALC 2019 Forum to Focus on Diversifying the Educator Pipeline and Developing Community-Minded Education Policy

Education Reform Now co-hosts forum designed to find ways to counter systemic racism in America’s education system

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Education Reform Now is pleased to co-sponsor a forum today with the Center for American Progress focused on keeping communities at the center of education policy development and finding ways to advance equity by building a racially diverse educator workforce at the 2019 Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference.

To achieve our goal of creating access to equitable education for all students, we need a teaching force that matches the diversity of our students. Education Reform Now is continuing to build a network of progressive champions, allies, and supporters to change what is broken in the public education system through policy, advocacy and, thought leadership.

The forum is in collaboration with Chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA). Featured speakers include Rep. Jahana Hayes (D-CT), Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), and Sonja Santelises, the CEO of the Baltimore City Public Schools.

“It’s time to make bold and necessary changes to better recruit, train, and retain educators of color in America’s schools. Such steps will help break a cycle in our education system in which people of color are significantly under-represented in leadership roles,” said Shavar Jeffries, president of Education Reform Now. “We know what the research says about the tremendous impact of having just one teacher of color for a student of color, so let’s send a powerful message of belonging and possibility to all of our students.”

Please join us from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in room 202A at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, 801 Mt. Vernon Place NW, Washington, D.C., for a robust, solutions-oriented discussion about equity in education and community. View the full agenda.
