DFER-Louisiana State Director on Trump Administration’s Announcement of Ending DACA Program
Announcement jeopardizes future for an estimated 8,000 students in Louisiana
NEW ORLEANS, LA – On Tuesday, September 5, 2017, the Trump Administration formally announced the end to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, a program which protects nearly 800,000 young undocumented immigrants from deportation who were brought to the U.S. as children.
Following this action, Democrats for Education Reform-Louisiana’s State Director Eva Kemp released this statement:
“I am extremely disturbed to see President Trump’s decision to rescind the DACA program. As a DFER, a native Louisianan and an American, I think it’s simply unconscionable that the Trump Administration is considering an action that would deport nearly a million young people and tear apart families across the country just so the President can ‘keep a campaign promise’,” said Kemp. “In Louisiana, we know our state is as rich as the gumbo we cook- made up of various ingredients with a lot of flavor. That’s what makes not only this state, but our country unique, successful and full of opportunity.
“This decision will undoubtedly bring harm to nearly a million students across the country and an estimated 8,000 students right here in Louisiana; students who seek to excel, contribute to our economy, and build upon the hope and opportunity our nation and our state offers.
“I urge our leaders in Louisiana and those representing our state in Congress to denounce the decision made by the Trump Administration and defend the students and their families impacted. We must defend our DREAMers,” said Kemp.
