Democrats for Education Reform Applauds Mayor Cory Booker’s Win in the
New Jersey U.S. Senate Race

Newark, NJ, October 16, 2013 – Democrats for Education Reform (DFER) released the following statement today by Executive Director Joe Williams:

“Democrats for Education Reform celebrates Newark Mayor Cory Booker’s victory tonight as voters elect him as New Jersey’s United States Senator, filling former Senator Frank Lautenberg’s vacant seat. As Mayor, Booker catalyzed tremendous gains in Newark’s education reform movement and became a leading voice for students calling for high-quality public school options across the nation.

“Mayor Booker’s leadership ignited real changes in Newark public schools, both traditional and charter, in ways we never saw before his election in 2006. We believe the reforms he helped implement in the city have solid roots—bolstered by the demands of parents seeking high-quality options for their children—which will last for years to come thanks to his efforts.

“With the current discord in Washington, DC, we eagerly await Booker’s rational and results-driven approach on Capitol Hill. Particularly with the pending reauthorization of Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), knowing we have a new champion of students in the U.S. Senate is an incredible win.

“Cory Booker is the real deal. He fights tirelessly for all students to have access to an exceptional education. Tonight, not just Newark but now our country is in a better position to finally reach the day when the American public education system in its entirety delivers on its promise to provide every child the opportunity to realize their infinite potential.”
