DFER-WI Statement on State Rep. Christine Sinicki’s Resignation from Select Committee on Common Core Standards

Milwaukee, WI, November 1, 2013 – State Director of Democrats for Education Reform Wisconsin (DFER-WI) applauded state Representative Christine Sinicki today for her courage to speak out against a deeply biased hearing process on the Common Core State Standards driven by Tea Party extremists.

DFER-WI State Director Jarett Fields made the following statement:

“We appreciate Rep. Sinicki’s willingness to stand up for what’s right for her district and for Wisconsin’s children. She has done our state a great service by drawing attention to the deeply biased legislative hearing process on Common Core in our state driven by extreme right wing ideologues.

“Although I don’t necessarily agree with Rep. Sinicki’s decision to withdraw from the Select Committee, her critique of the process is valid and signals that those in favor of a more rational process must speak up and take action.

“Common Core is the right move for Wisconsin to guarantee all our kids are college-and-career ready. Yet, members of the Tea Party and the John Birch Society have hijacked the conversation in the state legislature, providing arguments against the standards that are designed to incite fear rather than to inform public policy. It is time to put a stop to the propaganda campaign against Common Core that is happening in Wisconsin and across the nation for the sake of all our kids.”

On Wednesday, Sinicki announced her resignation from the Select Committee on Common Core Standards. In her letter of resignation, she expressed her concern that the Tea Party wing of the Republican Party was controlling debates involving Common Core State Standards in the Wisconsin legislature and ignoring the voices of teachers, administrators, and citizens who overwhelmingly support the standards in the state.
