Democrats for Education Reform Congratulates Tuck on Advancing to Runoff

Statement from DFER’s Joe Williams on California state superintendent candidate Marshall Tuck’s successful challenge to incumbent Tom Torlakson:

“Congratulations to Marshall Tuck on earning enough votes last night to challenge Tom Torlakson to a runoff in November. Marshall is a hard-working leader with a proven record of success, and he’s shown he has what it takes to champion great schools for all kids.

“The groundswell of support that helped Marshall gain traction against an entrenched incumbent shows the battle over the soul of the Democratic Party marches on. Voters are ready for change, and believe finding a sensible but ambitious approach to improving our public schools should be a priority.”

Formerly of Green Dot Public Schools, Marshall Tuck fought an uphill battle against Torlakson, who received a $4 million dollar influx of cash from the California Teacher’s Association. Thanks to his tenacity, Tuck won endorsements from every major newspaper in California.

With an eighth of the country’s students in California, this win is not just a win for the children of California but one to be celebrated across the nation.
