Shavar Jeffries Statement on Senate HELP Committee
Vote on Acting Secretary John King

Following today’s vote by the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions to further the confirmation process for Acting Secretary John King, DFER National President Shavar Jeffries released the following statement:

“We are thrilled that Acting Secretary of Education John King is another important step closer to confirmation. We want to thank Chairman Alexander, Ranking Member Murray, and the members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions for their bipartisan support of Acting Secretary King’s full nomination.

“John King is a visionary leader and a proven champion for America’s students. There is nobody better suited to continue the Obama administration’s historic legacy of investing in both expanded resources and common sense policy reforms for K-12 education. Just two months into the job, John has already made a tangible impact on the lives of our students and is hard at work ensuring effective and equitable state and local implementation of ESSA.

“Every child in this country deserves access to a high-quality public education, regardless of their background or zip code – and under John King’s leadership, I know we will continue to make enormous strides in ensuring that this promise is a reality for more American schoolchildren. We look forward to a swift confirmation vote on the Senate floor and are eager to finally address John King as our Secretary of Education.”
