Democrats for Education Reform-Louisiana Names Caroline Fayard as choice for U.S. Senate

U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu comments; Endorsement gains attention from statewide media

NEW ORLEANS, LA – Last week, Democrats for Education Reform-Louisiana formally endorsed civil rights attorney Caroline Fayard for the U.S. Senate:

“With Caroline Fayard as Louisiana’s next Senator, families and children will once again have a champion fighting for them on Capitol Hill,” said Eva Kemp, State Director for DFER-LA.

DFER Advisory Board Member and former U.S. Senator Mary L. Landrieu said: “I am confident that Caroline Fayard will support high quality public school options, including charter schools. Caroline recognizes the impact these options have on our most vulnerable children and it’s essential that Louisiana’s next Senator fights for education excellence as a top priority.”

“Caroline Fayard understands that education is essential to bolstering Louisiana’s families,” said Kemp.“Not only will she work to preserve the gains our public school systems have made over the last decade, but Caroline will also work to ensure each student has access to a world-class education, regardless of their zip code or socioeconomic status. Caroline is the clear choice for Louisiana families.”

Multiple news outlets across Louisiana picked up the news of DFER-LA’s endorsement, including The Baton Rouge Advocate’s Will Sentell, who highlighted Sen. Landrieu’s praise of Fayard, and KARD (FOX) in Monroe, La., highlighted the endorsement during their nightly news ‘political minute.’

Following DFER-LA’s formal endorsement of Fayard, the DFER-LA team joined Caroline Fayard and her campaign team to deliver school supplies to Friendship Capitol High School in Baton Rouge, La.

Fayard and her team have continued to coordinate relief efforts and donation drop-offs across East Baton Rouge, Ascension and Livingston parishes following the flooding that has devastated the majority of South Louisiana. A quarter of Friendship Capitol High School students and faculty faced tremendous loss after the recent flooding; Fayard and her team, along with DFER-LA, delivered a truckload of supplies needed by teachers and students at the school last Friday morning.

Television stations in South Louisiana including WDSU (NBC) New Orleans and WVLA (NBC) Baton Rouge highlighted the school supply drop off during their afternoon and nightly news segments.

Caroline Fayard is a New Orleans attorney, running for U.S. Senate as a champion of women’s right to equal pay, a raise in the minimum wage, and equal rights for all Louisianans. Raised in Denham Springs in Livingston Parish, she is campaigning for a new generation of leadership to help move Louisiana forward. She is a board member and past president of Louisiana Appleseed, and serves on the board of Evacuteer.org, the Louisiana Children’s Museum, and the New Leaders Council.

DFER-Louisiana is a political reform organization formed in 2015 that cultivates and supports leaders who champion Louisiana’s public schoolchildren. DFER-LA engages with a growing constituency of active, reform-minded candidates and works with partners and allies to further Louisiana as a leader in the next evolution of the movement to give every child a great education.

Over the last year, DFER-LA has been actively engaged in local and statewide elections, providing direct support to reform-minded leaders who are dedicated to improving the lives of children in New Orleans and across the state, including Governor John Bel Edwards, Jada Lewis, Kira Orange Jones, Senators Wesley Bishop, Troy Carter, JP Morrell, Speaker Pro Tempore Walt Leger, Representatives Jimmy Harris, Gary Carter and Mr. John Brown of the Orleans Parish School Board. We look forward to offering similar and increased support to candidates in 2016 and beyond.
