New Orleans Taxpayers Vote to Continue Supporting Public School Students

All three public school millage renewals pass

$38 million to go directly to all New Orleans public schools over the next 10 years

NEW ORLEANS, LA – Following the reported victories of the three public school millage renewals (Proposition A: 69%; Proposition B: 66%; Proposition C: 65% ), Democrats for Education Reform-Louisiana’s State Director, Eva Kemp, released the following statement:

“Thank you, Orleans Parish voters, for choosing to invest in students and voting yes to all three public school millage renewals. I am thrilled that voters chose to continue putting students first. These millages will generate $38 million for instructional materials, school supplies, dropout prevention programs, and skilled teachers in every public school across the city,” said Kemp. “The DFER-Louisiana team looks forward to continuing our partnership with the Orleans Parish School Board and city leadership in working toward educational excellence in New Orleans.”

“In renewing the millages, New Orleanians have decided to remain steadfast in their commitment to our kids’ futures and to the progress we have made over the past 12 years,” said Kemp.I believe an investment in our students is an investment in our city, state and country. Graduation rates are up, test scores are up and dropout rates are down–but we cannot afford to rest on our laurels. We must continue building upon that progress. Renewing these millages allows our city to do just that.”

Kemp added, “The DFER-Louisiana team would also like to offer our congratulations to the municipal candidates who were elected this evening, specifically Councilman At Large-elect Jason Williams and Councilwoman At Large-elect Helena Moreno, as well as those candidates who have advanced to November’s runoff election. We look forward to working with these leaders toward solutions for our youngest and most vulnerable students.”
