WASHINGTON, D.C. (Nov. 26, 2019) – Education Reform Now DC Deputy Director Jess Giles issued the following statement on the release of the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) annual report card:
“These results provide further evidence that the changes we’ve made to transform our public schools are having a positive impact on our students—particularly the District’s at-risk students. Especially promising—nearly 30 percent of the schools in Wards 7 and 8 went up by one or more STAR Ratings.
We’re moving in the right direction, yet there is also clearly much more work ahead to close achievement gaps for historically underserved students, as schools with higher proportions of at-risk student populations remain more likely to have lower ratings.
Having clear, detailed performance metrics, like those included in this year’s report card, will continued to be a valuable resource for parents, educators and policymakers, as we work to ensure continued progress.”
