Baton Rouge, La – After today’s vote on House Bill 166, Democrats for Education Reform Louisiana state director, Eva Kemp-Melder, released the following statement:
“DFER Louisiana would like to thank the lawmakers in the Louisiana House of Representatives who stood up for New Orleans’ students and educators on Monday by voting against House Bill 166, which would have forcibly returned eligible RSD charter schools to the Orleans Parish School Board.
“With its defeat, we can now focus our attention toward improving outcomes for kids, encouraging schools to thrive and innovate, and working toward policies that benefit all students in New Orleans and throughout our state.
“Today’s vote not only reflects the sentiments of the citizens of New Orleans, who feel more confident in the state of education today than they did prior to Hurricane Katrina, but also demonstrates the willingness of our elected leaders to stand up for high-‐quality public charter schools and their significant impact on student achievement in our state.
“DFER will continue to work with educators and elected officials in Louisiana to ensure that the interests of public school students and families remain paramount in education policy decisions.”
