DFER-Louisiana Applauds Steady Gains in Louisiana Public Education 

Early Childhood Education reaches historic milestones statewide  

Department of Education launches Louisiana School Finder for students & families

NEW ORLEANS, LA – Following yesterday’s release of the 2016-2017 school and district performance score reports from the Louisiana Department of Education, Democrats for Education Reform State Director Eva Kemp released the following statement:

“Yesterday’s performance scores highlight three facts for our organization. First, that students across the state are continuing to work hard and reach the high marks set for them. I believe our students are on track to reaching Mastery-level scores,” said Kemp. “While scores in New Orleans were certainly disappointing, I know there is still good news in the trends we see over the last 12 years; our students have continued to prove that they can perform at high levels. We should continue to provide those opportunities for them in every corner of the city. I look forward to continuing to work with our elected leaders on OPSB and BESE to ensure we hold schools and school leaders accountable for improving results.

“Second, Louisiana remains a leader for our country when it comes to specific components of public education. We are among the first in the United States to offer comprehensive performance profiles for Early Childhood Education providers and schools, and early childhood education is making historic progress statewide. In addition, the department has released the Louisiana School Finder that will allow parents and families to evaluate and compare K-12 public schools and child care centers around the state.

“Finally, while significant gains ought to be celebrated, there are still schools who are struggling to fully serve their students across the state and in New Orleans. It is essential that community members, advocates, and public education leaders double down on our efforts to ensure that each and every student is receiving a world-class education right here at home,” said Kemp.

“We would also like to congratulate each school and district who earned high marks in this year’s performance scores report. It’s apparent that these communities are committed to excellence for their students. Each school should be proud of the successes being recognized this week,” said Kemp. “DFER-Louisiana remains committed to cultivating leaders who continue to put students first, and we look forward to working with community members, parents, educators, school leaders, advocates and elected officials to ensure each student is on track to succeed in whatever manner to which they aspire.”
