Louisiana State Director says, “Louisiana voters have selected a strong team of public servants who will work to continue improving our schools”

Following the decisive wins of Kira Orange Jones and Jada Lewis to the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE), Democrats for Education Reform (DFER) released statements by DFER-LA State Director Eva Kemp and DFER National President Shavar Jeffries:

“Tonight’s election results are crystal clear: Louisiana parents continue to demand a high-quality education for their children. Louisiana voters have selected a strong team of public servants who will work to continue improving our schools. Kira Orange Jones has proven over the last four years that her first priority is ensuring that every student in Louisiana has access to a high quality education. Jada Lewis will now join Orange Jones in this effort with a strong mandate from Louisiana voters to do what it takes to continue to improve our schools and ensure that children—not politics—come first,” said Kemp. “Tonight’s vote reaffirms that parents are committed to implementing reforms and building upon the progress we’ve made. I’m excited that we will have incredible quality education champions and dedicated public servants serving our state.”

“At its core, the Democratic Party is dedicated to expanding opportunity for all. DFER is proud to support candidates who represent the best of what our party stands for: the fundamental belief that every person, regardless of where they are born, deserves a chance to succeed. In this election, we’ve supported candidates who will push for adequate funding for our schools and teachers, who will continue to invest in public charter schools that give parents the ability to choose the best school possible for their child, and, who will be honest when methods aren’t working, and invest further in the methods that are. These efforts will help thousands of schoolchildren live up to their God-given potential,” said Jeffries. “We congratulate the winners in tonight’s election. We were honored to be part of your team for this campaign and we look forward to the work you’ll do on behalf of Louisiana students.”
